villanelle – not all grow old

remember well not all grow old
learn laughter to keep age at bay
or else learn to embrace that cold

forget all tales that you’ve been told
fear wanes away at close of day
remember well not all grow old

the terrified will always fold
they quit and hide their hopes away
or else learn to embrace that cold

you wish to prove your heart is gold
learn sacrifice and join the fray
remember well not all grow old

you’ll think your dreams have all been sold
if you stall and in one place stay
or else learn to embrace that cold

we all return to dust and mold
and lose ourselves into the grey
remember well not all grow old
or else learn to embrace that cold

lessons from a mockingbird

Learn all the sounds
and mimic them ad nauseum.
Swoop at cats and people
and anything that pisses you off.
Harass other birds
because it’s your territory
and fuck ’em.
Build your nest fearlessly
close to the ground
and live unapologetically loud.
Sing all day.
Sing all night.
Sing all the time.
Never let them sleep on you.
Never let them think you’re through.

lessons from a fool

Luck favors the bold
just as much as the foolish

is it better to be foolish or bold?

or perhaps
is it foolish to be bold?
is it bold to be foolish?

maybe they are the same
sharing the core
that certainty in self
the confidence to act
where action fails in most

perhaps we should all be
boldly foolish
to live in Her favor
and find worth within

eclipse

For a moment
there was a cacophony of crows
as the temperature cooled and the darkness grew

At totality
a cheer from the watchers
and the brightest stars shone through

And then
like all fleeting things
it passed, returning the daylight to view
